Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions we get as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and our (my wife and I’s) response to them all. Please feel free to register and ask us something we may have missed. Please also visit one of our topic categories by clicking on them on the left hand side.

  • Why don’t you drink caffeine? Is that a commandment of God?
Simply put, we have been given the commandment to take care of our bodies, as they are gifts from God as part of His plan of happiness for us. In Mormon doctrine, God himself has given us a “word of wisdom” in that he commands us to eat and partake of the food of this earth, but to do so in wisdom, avoiding anything that harms the body or can be addictive. So, no it is not a commandment specifically to abstain from caffeine, but it is a commandment and wise to abstain from any drink, coffee especially, that can become addictive and can be harmful to the body. We have felt that coffee is definitely one of those drinks that can be addictive and harmful to the body (just watch what happens to those who don’t get their cup of coffee in the morning, and ask yourself if coffee is good or bad for the body).
  • Are Mormons Christians? Are they a cult?
As stated on the home page, Mormons are unequivocally Christians. We worship Jesus Christ and no other. (read more) We laugh when we hear the label of “cult” when referring to the Mormons. We have politely approached any such person who has followed that route and asked them if they know anything about our religion? They usually reply with surprise (even though some revolt completely at the audacity of a Mormon asking such a question) and say something like, “well, I’ve never read your books, I’ve never studied your religion, but you are a cult. Aren’t you?” We then take a moment to share with them our beliefs and our desire to follow and worship Jesus Christ as our Savior. (read more)
  • Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?
We get a kick out of this one, but realize that the common mistake is simply due to misinformation usually from people who just don’t care to do a little research and read, as well as the expected opposition to truth. We do not worship Joseph or any other man, woman or thing on this earth, but we do worship God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. (read more about Joseph Smith)
  • Why are you called Mormons? Who is Mormon?
The title or nickname “Mormon” comes from a prophet whose name was Mormon. This prophet lived on the American Continent around 322 AD. Mormon abridged (compiled) the records of the many prophets who lived, prophesied and died here in the Americas from 600 BC to 421 AD. (read more) The real name of the church is, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints“.
  • Do Mormons practice Polygamy?
The answer is simply, no. We do not teach or practice any form of polygamy or plural marriage. (read more)
  • What is a Mormon Garment? Can I get one?
Garments are sacred clothing worn by Temple Covenant Mormons. We wear our garments just like you would wear your underclothing. We revere our garments as sacred and they are a symbol of our inward devotion to God and the covenants we make with him in our Temples, while reminding us to reflect those inward covenants by our outward appearance, behaviors, and respect to our fellow men. (read more about Temples). Only those members of the Mormon church who are worthy to enter the Temples can obtain garments and then wear them after they have entered the Temple and made sacred covenants with God. We know God to be a personable, perfect, loving father, and because he is such, he desires his children to enjoy what he enjoys. Temple garments are part of the pattern he uses to lovingly help us become like him.
  • I have heard Mormons believe they can become Gods? Is that a true statement?
Let us answer simply by stating the obvious. I am a father. I have a son whom I love. I will do everything I can to make sure my son has all the advantages to become a worthy, loving, Christ-like father himself. I want him to have all the joys I have had. He will become his own individual, but will mostly be a makeup of  how his father raised him. So, it should be expected that we, as God’s children, would be given from a perfect loving Heavenly Father, all the opportunities to excel, grow, and eventually become like he is, enjoy what he enjoys and do what he does. So yes, we believe, and Christ suffered for us so that it may be so for those who repent in sincerity, that we can become Gods, like our Heavenly Father. For my wife and I, becoming Gods means we become loving parents forever, with posterity that will continue forever, which is one of the purposes of Mormon temples, becoming sealed as a couple forever.
